Outline of the exhibition

MARUEIDO JAPAN is pleased to announce that it will hold a solo exhibition by HANAFUSA (SUZUKI) Sayaka entitled ‘inside and outside.’
-------------------
Up until now, I have been painting the relationship between the "inside and outside" by using "frames"
such as windows, mirrors and pictures-within-pictures, as clues.

The inside and the outside are not completely cut off by walls, but in fact move back and forth between each other.
However, somehow the inside of my paintings is linked and visually centered on interiors. My "inside and outside" series of paintings began earlier this year and they intentionally exclude this link and visual centering on interiors. I paint the space where interiors and exteriors are more connected.
In 2018 I moved to a small town called Nagi town, it has a population of about 6,000 and it is located in the northern part of Okayama Prefecture. Up until that point, I had just been a driver on paper, but in this small town I started actually driving myself around.
This part of Okayama is full of nature, so wherever you drive you are surrounded by it. Although this vast nature spreads out before me as scenery, the "nature" that can be seen from a vehicle, such as a car, while driving down a well-maintained road gives me a strange sense of distance.
At night I can hear animal calls, and in the morning, I sometimes find large droppings in front of my home. But at night, you can't see anything in the dark. Despite nature being close, I can't see it. I think I can hold it, but I can’t touch it. I don't know anything about the true colors or shapes of the scenery I see.
Amidst this kind of life, what if my art is outside too? I pondered this question a lot.
I often painted my studio as a space in a picture, but until now I had included “paint artworks" as pictures-within-pictures as a main part of my own art.
This time, I adopted the medium of sculpture, which can exist both indoors and outdoors, as my art and as my "inside and outside" series that allows a flat visual center for my paintings, unlinked from interiors, and for the outside and inside.
I had a very important year in France during 2019, it was particularly crucial for me that I had the opportunity to see many works by Henri Matisse and Auguste Rodin, and to think about the relationships between their art.
