Miyamura Gen

Born in Shizuoka Prefecture in 1980, he graduated from Niigata University Graduate School of Education, with a major in art education (calligraphy).
He creates artwork that audaciously interprets calligraphy as a form of “post-avant-garde” expression. In recent years, against the background of the aesthetics of calligraphy, he has presented new images for linguistic symbols, such as cryptography, Morse code, and Braille, as well as languages based on these communication systems.

The black ink expressionism outputted by Gen Miyamura is "abstract reading." He refers back to the avant-garde movement which continues to be the subject of scrutiny, and he attempts to clarify the arbitrary relationship of signifying and signified, which are at the root of modern linguistics, using a very intelligent and artificial methodology.
He praises Ferdinand de Saussure who tried to access the deep meaning that lurks beneath the language of poetry. I would like the viewers to fully mobilize their intellect and senses, and enjoy this cryptography work which rewrites methods of communication.
